Why I made Snooker Rivals

By Matt·2 October 2026·2 min read

This started because a friend and I wanted to play snooker against each other.

We tried a popular snooker game, but he was on an iPhone and I was on Android. We found we couldn't play together, so I built a simple snooker game that would let us.

Over time, we kept refining it until we had something we thought was really fun and intuitive to play. My friend suggested making it public to see if other people felt the same, so I've packaged it up as this pre-alpha.

If there's interest, I'll keep working on the project. There are still plenty of rough edges, but I'm happy enough with it now to let people try it and tell me what they think.

What I'd like to work on next

The table is one of the first things I want to get right. I know the current table and pockets aren't quite there yet, and working from reference images is difficult. We're planning to laser-scan a full match table in the week beginning 12 October 2026, so I can build from proper measurements.

I also want to spend more time comparing the physics with real shots. With the help of a professional player, the plan is to run real-world cause-and-effect tests, try the same shots in the game and use the results to tune it.

A replay system is on the list too. I'd like you to be able to watch your shots back.

The characters and animations are just prototypes at the moment. I'd like to improve them and eventually let you customize how your character looks. Paid cosmetics would give me a way to support development, but they would only change appearance. I don't want this to become a pay-to-win game.

I'd also like to add voice notes to room chat. Part of the appeal is just hanging out in a practice room, having a chat and making friends, and I think voice notes would help with that.

Once I'm happy with the physics, I'd like to build a proper online ranked system with leagues, challenges and progression. I want the shots to feel right before going further with competitive play.

The sound needs a complete overhaul as well. The current system is a prototype, and I want to replace it with more realistic cue and ball sounds, along with room ambience and crowd audio.

For now, give it a go and let me know what you think. If you'd like to share feedback or follow along, join us on Discord.
